All eyes involved with professional wrestling and even the ones who don’t like or don’t work for the WWE to some degree have fixed upon WrestleMania. The focus shifts now to Undertaker’s health or want of more money, Does Triple H come back to take revenge on the man, Brock Lesnar, who injured his father in law? Who else would POP if ‘Here Comes the Money’ hits and out walks Shane O Mac to challenge Lesnar? It won’t happen but for fantasy bookings sake I had to throw it out there. It is also crystal clear now John Cena versus The Rock will happen again, this time for the WWE Title. Alberto Del Rio will defend the World Heavyweight Title against Jack Swagger, who imagined saying that even two months back? While all the focus is on WrestleMania my focus, however, turns to what happens after Mania, even the follow-up episode of Raw the next night. What happens then? The Rock may or may not come back for summer time, and Brock Lesnar did sign another two-year, select dates, so he will be around every now and then for the foreseeable future. I don’t toss and turn at night thinking about the booking of these guys, but a select number of guys, eight to be exact. I almost added Zack Ryder to my list but he may be beyond saving, it’s a shame that a guy gets himself over, develops a following and the WWE just pretends it never happened and shuns him to the basement like Milton in Office Space. Daniel Bryan, Antonio Cesaro, all three members of The Shield, Dolph Ziggler, Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow where, oh where will these great talents land once WrestleMania Season is over.
Daniel Bryan and Kane’s time together as an odd ball couple seems to be almost up so what is in store for Bryan once Team Hell No dissolves? I like the idea of Kane and Bryan fighting for the Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania but that will force the hand of the WWE to pair Bryan or Kane up with another partner. If this were to go down I’d like Kane to go over and choose a partner which will free Bryan up to work in singles feuds again. Daniel Bryan can get over as a heel and a face, in the team he seems to be more of the heel so I think that’s where his character is heading despite the WWE is low on baby faces. Bryan is a main event attraction, but something deep down inside tells me he won’t be treated that way.
Best Case: He turns face, Ziggler cashes in that briefcase, and these two feud over the World Title for months and months.
Worst Case: In this worst case, it might not be a worse case as Bryan could turn face, settle somewhere in the mid card and end up feuding with Antonio Cesaro or Wade Barrett for a mid card title, but who wouldn’t want to see those matches?
Antonio Cesaro is an ace in the hole for the WWE. His in-ring ability is so above and beyond most of the WWE roster, he is very talented on the microphone and on commentary, it’s almost like CM Punk all over again, a guy so good, they just don’t know what to do with him. He is the current United States Champion, and the days keep piling up, but there is a plateau to being a mid card champion, ask Kofi Kingston and Zack Ryder if you don’t believe me. Somewhere down the line Cesaro needs to get a main event push, he deserves the chance to work and not just quash with the big boys.
Best Case: Jack Swagger wins the World Title, he and Cesaro get along because of their hatred for Americans, Swagger’s racism gets too extreme for Cesaro, he turns face and they feud over the World Heavyweight Title. Hey, they all can’t be winners but it gets Cesaro in the main event, on SmackDown at least.
Worst Case: He stays the US Champion until SummerSlam (It would be one year of being champion) and loses to Fandango.
The Shield is now 2-0 in the WWE against arguably the biggest names in the business currently. Not only are they 2-0 but they won both matches clean so they deserve and more than likely will be on the card come WrestleMania, but what then? With the tag team division so out of whack maybe the best idea is to put the titles on Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. Dean Ambrose can serve as their mouth piece or even go after a mid card title so he won’t be the only guy not carrying a strap. The possibilities are endless and there is no doubt these three men should be part of the big picture but in the WWE you just never know.
Best Case: All three men are carrying titles and or are at least involved in the top story lines are 2013 heads into SummerSlam, Survivor Series or even WrestleMania 30.
Worst Case: They end up like the Nexus and land either on the mid card, NXT, or raking in the big bucks on the indy scene again.
Cody Rhodes is not only a third generation wrestler in the WWE; he is following right along in his brother and father’s footsteps. Being a third generation anything doesn’t mean anything in the WWE you still have to earn it, just ask The Uso brothers. Cody has worked very hard to get where he is, stuck just like everyone else. His stock was on the rise with the birth of Rhode Scholars but since that is a thing of the past where does Cody land in WWE world? The WWE is filled up to the ears with heels, maybe the best path for Cody is to embrace the mustache chants and use it to turn him face.
Best Case: He is back involved with the Intercontinental Title again, I know that may not be idle but at least he wouldn’t be a forgotten face or sent that ‘you are not needed tonight or the whole week’ email.
Worst Case: He becomes the Zack Ryder of heels, performs well and goes over at house shows, but is rarely used on TV except to enhance guys.
Like Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow is another guy the WWE has that possess great in-ring ability and his character has received the heat that both the WWE and Sandow were hoping for. A lot of people think the WWE has too many titles, I think with the amount of great guys they current have maybe another title is in order. Damien is on a long list of guys that could be a mid card or even World Heavyweight Champion, why not bring in another title to feature more talent? That is almost the only way you can get into a storyline these days, that or become a successful movie star or affiliated with Paul Heyman This is Sandow’s second run with the WWE, anyone remember Idol Stevens? This time around Sandow has a pretty good idea of how things work and is using all of his abilities to stay fresh and a constant on TV. For his sake let’s just hope that trend continues.
Best Case: Either him or Cody win a mid card title, they feud over it and the winner moves on to main event status. Sandow’s character allows him to work with a lot of guys very easily: The Miz, Alberto Del Rio just to name a few.
Worst Case: He ends up teaching Basic English on Saturday Morning Slam each week.
Finally, Dolph Ziggler, many thought 2012 was going to be the year of Ziggler. Well, that ship sailed when CM Punk held the title the whole year and some. Ziggler, in my opinion, is ahead of all these guys with maybe the exception of Daniel Bryan and Antonio Cesaro. It seemed like he was destined to be the World Heavyweight Champion come WrestleMania, but it looks like the only way he is leaving Mania is by cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase. It was speculated pay per view after Raw after pay per view that Ziggler would cash in. Will WrestleMania be the time, let’s just all hope to the wrestling gods he isn’t involved in another last-minute spot with Kofi Kingston again on the ‘Grandest Stage of Them All.’
Best Case: He will be in the main event picture, heel or face, is what remains to be seen; there are a lot of guys on SmackDown that could chase Ziggler as a face champion. The list isn’t so long of faces that could quite keep up with Ziggler in and out of the ring. He deserves it; it’s time for Ziggler to be looked at as a top guy. If we end up with a Ziggler/ Chris Jericho match at WrestleMania that would be a great way to help catapult Ziggler to main event status.
Worst Case: He ends up in some stupid love triangle involving AJ and Big E Langston that plays out way longer then it should.
