We are just over a week away from SummerSlam, and I hate to say it, I’m just not that excited. The WWE calls it the biggest party of the summer, and traditionally considered the second biggest PPV of the year. But while the event may still turn into a big party, it does not feel like a big time PPV. Sure, the WWE will make some great promo videos like they always do to make it feel big. But when you look at the card and break down the build, you come to realize that the card just doesn’t have a big PPV feel to it.
Lets start with the Brock Lesnar/Triple H match. How long has this match been built for? Since May when Lesnar “broke” Triple H’s arm. But the problem the WWE ran into was that they signed Lesnar to a limited date deal. They had to watch and carefully place when they had Lesnar appear. But you are telling me that they couldn’t have had Lesnar show up at least once in June? While Paul Heyman being there helped out some, it didn’t hide the fact that Lesnar wasn’t there. Heyman needs to be there because Brock can’t cut a promo for his life. But why not have Lesnar show up just once and maybe jump Hunter. While Heyman has been good on the mic, it turned into the same thing every time he appeared.
Triple H: I WANNA FIGHT!
Paul Heyman: No
Triple H: Well Brock’s a coward.
Heyman: Is that how you teach your kids?
Triple H: Don’t talk about my family.
And it just continued like that. And does anyone else think that maybe adding Shawn Michaels to the match was just a way to get people to care more about the match? If he makes it there, of course. Lesnar told Michaels he would see him before next week. Shawn wasn’t jumped on RAW, so will he be jumped this week? They hyped up Lesnar and HHH being in the same building last week and nothing happened. Did Lesnar really need to appear just to say what he said. Couldn’t Heyman have said it? It just seems like Lesnar/HHH could have been built to be so much bigger, but instead it just feels like a typical WWE feud. The WWE has completely killed Lesnar’s heat, and I have this bad feeling Hunter will go over at SummerSlam, killing whatever heat Lesnar had left.
Now lets move on to the WWE Championship match. Had this match just been John Cena vs C.M. Punk, I think it would have been really good. But no. The WWE just HAD to add the Big Show to this match and make it a triple threat match. What exactly has the Big Show done in the last two months to deserve a WWE Title shot? He lost to John Cena at No Way Out and did not win the Money in the Bank Ladder Match at that PPV. So he gets to have a WWE Title match because??? He’s looked like a dominant force at times, and he can deliver a good promo, but nothing his character has done has warranted a WWE Title match. Can’t you just end his feud with John Cena already?
A one-on-one match between John Cena and C.M. Punk would not only have been a better match, but it also would have made more sense from a storyline stand point. Punk has been over-shadowed by John Cena ever since he became WWE Champion. Big Show just seems like an added and unnecessary third wheel that doesn’t belong there. Big Show will do nothing but drag down the pace of the match. I’m sure we will get ten minutes of Show just dominating both men and yelling and taunting the crowd, which is a typical Big Show match nowadays.
If there was actually one Big Show match I would have wanted to see, it would have been Big Show taking on Sheamus. The current Sheamus/Alberto del Rio feud is doing absolutely nothing for me. Remember when we were told that Alberto del Rio would be returning with an edge. Well, have you seen that edge in his character in recent weeks? No. Yeah, I haven’t either. It is pretty obvious that Del Rio isn’t winning the World Title and he’s just a guy there to fill space until someone comes in to win the World Title from Sheamus. But we know there is no way Show would have been pinned by Sheamus because Big Show can never be beaten clean by anyone. EVER. Once this program with Del Rio is over, Sheamus will move on to Wade Barrett or Randy Orton, or he may face a Dolph Ziggler MITB cash in. It’s just pretty obvious to me that Del Rio is not winning. The WWE missed their chance with Del Rio at Wrestlemania 27. Ever since then it has been down hill.
The biggest thing the WWE might have missed on is the returns of Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton. Orton is back, but the second biggest star in the WWE has no program heading into the “second biggest show of the year.” Then there’s Rey Mysterio, who has been treated like a mid-carder since his return. The WWE likes to hype both guys as big time stars, but you wouldn’t think it heading into SummerSlam. How about a one on one match between the two, with the winner receiving a World Title shot at Night of Champions. Or maybe one of them could have faced Daniel Bryan. While Kane makes sense for Bryan, a match between Bryan and Rey or Orton would have been better. I don’t know if the WWE just doesn’t have faith or trust them, but I think it is a mistake not having these two on an announced match on the card.
The only thing the WWE has done right is the Dolph Ziggler/Chris Jericho feud. I look forward to seeing that match at SummerSlam. For being the second biggest show of the year, the WWE hasn’t done a lot to make it feel like it. The show still has the chance to be great, but it just doesn’t feel like a big show to me. They could have done a lot worst, but they also could have done a lot better. The WWE has one RAW left to make a hard sell, and for their sake, I hope they pull out all the stops.
